Sleep disorder is fast becoming a problem among the people in many countries causing little to no sleep. Results found in a recently concluded survey showed that 35% of the Americans suffer from sleeping disorder every night.

Many medicines have been discovered in the market to fix up sleeping disorders. They are basically of two types – benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines increase the sleep in the deep third and fourth stages of the sleep. But while taking this group of medicines, people complain of bad hangover effects during the next part of the day. On the contrary, people taking non- benzodiazepines drugs say that effects of the medicine are lesser on the next day. This group of medicines tends to act on the certain receptors of the brain and do not affect all the receptors of the brain in patients receiving no sleep.

These types of medicines are to be strictly avoided in case of pregnant women getting no sleep and also if one has to wake up at certain times of the night for taking care of the child or some other work. So, before buying a sleeping drug, always read about the side effects written on the side of the bottle. FDA authorities have claimed that many cases of allergic reactions and facial swelling have arisen by taking these medications.

Various types of sleeping pills are available in the market and one must know the side effects of each before deciding which one to buy. Some sleeping drugs are also anti-depressant types and they are effective in treating sleeplessness which is arisen from depression. Once the depression in the person gets over he can sleep normally at night. So, if you are suffering from depression and could not sleep well at night, then this type of medicines can cure your sleep related disorder quite well.
Many people have also a tendency of buying over the counter sleep aids. You must know that most of these over the counter sleeping pills are antihistamines. These medicines are fine if sold without prescription, but they may develop a feeling of drowsiness over the next day. But if anybody is taking medicines related to cold or allergy, then they must avoid these over the counter no sleep sleeping pills. These two types of drugs are similar and hence should not be taken simultaneously.
Among the sleeping drugs, Ambien is a very popular drug and it has got a moderate half life of less than three hours. It is a very useful drug to make you sleep fast, but problem will start if you wake up in the odd hours of the night. Ambien CR has taken care of the

Modern research shows that insomnia or sleeping disorder should not be treated as something of a chronic disorder. Doctors nowadays are saying that the treatment for such diseases should not end just by giving the medicine alone. Along with the medicine, there has to be a comprehensive guide to solve this problem for ever.

One must follow the following simple steps in order to develop a good sleeping habit. They can be summarized as follows –

a) The bed must be used only for sleeping purposes. One must not do any other work like reading or working with the laptop on the bed.
b) It is better to avoid intake of nicotine, caffeine and alcohol for four to six hours before going to bed. Doing exercises in the late evening must also be avoided as they may cause little to no sleep.
c) Always try to keep your bedroom quiet and peaceful. If it becomes impossible to avoid light and noise coming into the room, then it is advisable to wear a sleeping mask or a noise machine.
d) Keep the time of going to bed and also time of wake up fixed. Do not change this routine even during the weekends. This will help you to feel sleepy at a fixed time during the bedtime everyday.

A recent study has revealed that combination of no sleep with high diabetes may cause many damages to the body. If anybody is suffering from high glucose levels and he sleeps poorly, then it will be really difficult for him to control the disease, making it hard for anyone without health care to survive.

The study was carried on a sample of 600 people. Out of them, 40 had high diabetes and 560 were without any high sugar level. A close monitoring was done on the quality of sleep and blood sugar level and various other methods of control of the diabetes disease. While observing the various measurements, scientists concluded that there is a close link between glucose measures and the poor quality of sleep or no sleep at all. Persons who do not have any control on their diabetes, are generally found to sleep poorly.

The experiment continued for six nights and during the course of the experiment, every person was given a wrist band with a monitor control attached with it. The logic is that every time a person gets disturbed in his sleep, his wrist will move. Next morning, from the counter in the wrist band, it can be estimated that how many times the person got awakened during the whole night. The result will give a clear indication about the poor sleep or no sleep of the person during the night.

During the course of the experiment, it was observed that people with type 2 diabetes tend to be overweight and that may also hamper their sleep quality to a great extent. There is a direct link between obesity and sleep apnea. It is a disease where the patient stops breathing at night and then gets awakened. This process disturbs his sleep to a great extent.

A diabetic patient can sleep well if he can reduce his stress to a great extent. So, if you are suffering from diabetes, you must take your sleep seriously and also see that you never get stressed under any circumstances at any point of the day. A less stress can not only help you to sleep well, but can also help in controlling your diabetes to a great extent.

People having a greater level of blood glucose generally develop many complications in their health. Poor sleep adds to greater complications and other risk factors and their quality of life get reduced to a great extent. The most dangerous factor is that their life expectancy also can get reduced because of these reasons.

It was also observed in the experiment that among the diabetic patients, higher blood glucose level is observed among the 23 per cent of the poor sleepers in the morning and 48 per cent of them have higher blood insulin levels. Using these statistical figures, researchers came to the conclusion that if a diabetic patient has got poor sleeping habits, then he will have 82 per cent higher chance of insulin resistance than any normal person with diabetes who sleeps well.

So, if a person is suffering from diabetes and is getting little or no sleep during the night, then he or she must consult a doctor for guidance. While curing the disease of diabetes, if he can sleep well, then he will be able to keep a control on his diabetic level and that will give him relief from other medical complications.

It has also been found that lack of proper sleep may increase diabetes in those persons who are suffering from type 2 diabetes. After three nights of poor sleep, they become very much less sensitive to insulin. As a result, they need more insulin to dissolve more glucose and if that insulin is not available, risk of type 2 diabetes increases to a great extent. Hence it can be said that if there is a decrease in sleep, it has got significantly bad effect on insulin sensitivity and tolerance of glucose level.

One of the oldest, and commonest, ailments known to man is an inability to sleep causing little to no sleep, or to wake up still feeling tired – Insomnia. The word is derived from Latin – “in” meaning not and “somnus” meaning sleep, and broadly covers any difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep for extended periods of time.

It is considered both a disorder and a symptom, for while it can be a malady on its own, most often it is a manifestation of stress, worry or psychiatric disorders. The former is classified as primary insomnia, not attributable to medical, environmental or psychiatric causes. The latter is secondary, or comorbid insomnia. Insomnia that lasts for less than a week is transient, if it lasts for less than a month it is acute, and if it continues for more than a month, it is chronic. While transient and acute insomnia can be caused by environmental changes, severe depression or stress, chronic insomnia is often primary in nature. It causes muscle fatigue, no sleep, hallucinations and double vision. Inability to fall asleep initially is called sleep-onset insomnia, and can be caused by anxiety or changed sleep patterns. Middle-of-the-night insomnia or terminal insomnia, on the other hand, refer to a difficulty in falling asleep after waking up in the middle of the night, or at dawn, respectively. The former is a manifestation of pain or illness; the latter of depression.

Doctors say insomnia is more prevalent among the older age group and women; in the latter case it can be associated with menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. Use of Psychoactive drugs, including medication for cold, high blood-pressure, asthma, thyroid diseases can be a cause; while sleep disorders like Restless Limbs Syndrome (RLS) and sleep apnea can also lead to insomnia. It is also caused by some neurological disorders, brain lesions and traumatic brain injuries.

There is a wealth of research data available on the various causes and symptoms of insomnia, as well as on its treatment. If the insomnia is stress induced, it is most likely to resolve itself once the underlying event is resolved. Similarly, changes in sleep pattern or environment, if resolved, lead to a resolution most of the time. But in case of acute or chronic insomnia, your doctor will start with a full medical history and thorough physical examination. He will also recommend behavior therapy, since insomnia is most often a manifestation of a behavioral disorder. Behavioral therapy can be of different types, such as stimulus control, cognitive behavior, sleep restrictions such as no sleep at all. A variety of relaxation techniques, such as hypnosis, yoga, meditation and guided imagery are also tried out as non-pharmacological treatment regimes.

As for medication, research shows that 95% of insomnia patients who get no sleep at night depend on some form of medicine. Research has shown that most of the Americans complain of this disease named insomnia. To some patients, it continues for many nights and to many, it even last for several months or even years. Half of these patients have complained that they are suffering from this disease because of worries and tension. Others say that they have developed the diseases from digestive disorder and other pain which remains in the body.

Insomnia is also found to be more in elderly men and women. In case of women, the disease may occur due to pregnancy, menopause and menstruation. With increase of age, the chance of occurrence of the disease increases to a great extent.

However, sedatives such as benzodiazepines and newer nonbenzodiazepine drugs can cause a host of side effects such as addiction, fatigue, motor neuron disorders, little to no sleep and cognitive impairments. You can try out natural remedies – herbs such as valerian or lavender; or a change in your diet patterns.

If you have a baby, you must know that getting him or her to sleep is one of the biggest challenges of parents. Though some doctors say that let the babies cry themselves to sleep, many mothers have complained that by trying this method, their babies have developed problems related to insomnia.
Doctors have found that marital problems between the parents can affect the sleep of the child till he is nine months old. The study was conducted on 357 babies and it was found that parents having high levels of martial instability suffer more from sleep problems than kids who do not suffer from martial problems. In the study, it was found that children with eighteen months of age are suffering from sleep due to these problems. If there is martial discord in the house, anxiety level among the children increases to a great extent and that affects their sleep to a great extent.

In the houses where there is martial problems going on, parents must visit a marriage counselor and try to work out something to improve their marriage. That will not only improve their own married life, but will also help their kids a lot to sleep well. The parents must also try to sort out things between themselves so that the clash between them gets reduced to a great extent.

It has also been found that sleep issues occur in children who do have happily married parents. In such cases, the situation needs to be tackled in a different way. There are several methods which such parents should follow in order to make their child sleep. They can be summarized as follows –

1) It is better to set a regular time for wake up on all seven days of the week. Since it is impossible for the parents to have any control on the time when he/she sleeps, it is better to control the time when he/she wakes up. Set up an earlier wake up time for the child and within few days, you can see that he/she is falling asleep earlier.

2) If the kid is more than four years old, then he must not be allowed to take any afternoon nap. A nap in the afternoon or during some time of the day can definitely keep your kid awake till late night. If your toddler needs a nap, make it a point to be sure that it does not go beyond three to four hours time.

3) Just like all other work a fixed time for his bedtime needs to be fixed. Just as he has got a fixed time for his brushing teeth, bath, reading books, he must have a fixed time for going to bed.

4) It will be better if the light exposure be made minimum during night. The lights should be made dimmed two hours before the bedtime and all TV’s, computer and iPods be switched off at that time. Any exposure to bright light may affect the release of melatonin, a sleep hormone.

5) Do not keep any pets on the bed of your child when he/she goes to sleep at night. They can start playing at any time and delay his sleep.

6) A person must not take any caffeinated beverage within eight hours before bedtime. Some stimulant drugs used for some other treatment must also be avoided to have a good sleep. If your kid is undergoing such treatment, it is better to shift the dose to some time earlier and it will help him/her to have nice night sleep.
So, if your kid can sleep well, then it will be very much helpful for the proper growth and nourishment of his health. Another thing is that if the kid sleeps well in proper time, then the parents can also sleep well in normal timings. This will also help them a lot to attend office and do other duties properly the very next day.

The latest innovation in science and technology has made the human life so busy and dozy that he hardly gets any time for proper rest and comfort. The age of technology has overpowered the human mind and soul to such extend that he is unprecedentedly getting himself engulfed into chronic health ailments.

A 24-hour-a-day and seven-day-a-week working profile is completely taking away the resting hours of humans and making them to work like a machine, in order to have the loads of material wealth into their pockets. The latest technology such as internet, online chatting, e- mails, late night duties have taken away the peace and rest of mind of people causing little to no sleep. Instead of this, they are increasingly blessed with innumerable health problems like heart disease, hypertension, Depression, diabetes, obesity, cancer, etc.

It has been clearly depicted in the reports of the Harvard-run Nurses’ Health Study that out of the sample taken of 11000 adults, aged between 32 to 49 years most of them are found to suffering from one or the other chronic ailment related to obesity, diabetes or hypertension due to deprived or no sleep, some also claim seeing the symptoms after wisdomteeth-removal. The major cause of this ailment is the disruptions of hormonal balance in the body causing, fatigue, weakness and undue health problems. Another important factor leading to the emergence of these chronic diseases is the high level of protein in the body due to improper eating habits.

The improper sleep or no sleep has an adverse affect on the performance, health and safety of human being by simply increasing the mental stress or depression of the daily life. The stress could be of anything it could be of personal, financial, social or family one, which may keep on intruding one’ s mind, body and nervous system all the daylong and leading him to get close to unwanted chronic health ailments.

Emmanuel Mignot, renowned professor of Stanford University, USA, revealed in his new journal based on Obesity and Sleep that, “people have started believing that there is an inverse relationship between the inadequate sleep and health ailments”.

However, to counterfeit the Emmanuel Mignot statement, Daniel F. Kripke, Professor of the University of California, San Diego commented that, “less of hours of sleep is increasing the life expectancy of people and making them healthier than generations ago. The requisite hours of sleep make people habitual to one routine and this make them more disciplined and scheduled in their daily life.”

Though, most of the scientists totally disagree with the statement put forward by, Daniel F. Kripke and recommends that people should maintain an adequate balance between the sleep and work. And if they fail to do so then they are endangering their lives to several chronic health ailments, which may drastically affect their mind and bodily function. One should not let their sleeping hours go down at the cost of family, sedentary lifestyle or working hours and invite oneself to the death bed.

Any sort of sleep deprivation leads to numerous mental and bodily problems such as:

It drastically decreases the performance level and mind alertness to near about 33%.

The decreased alertness of mind may result in the cognitive and memory impairment of the brain.

Improper sleep leads to the disturbance in personal relationship with the partner.

It makes you lethargic and inactive to take enthusiastic participation in family or social functions.

Once a person is detected with sleep deprivation or insomnia should be treated clinically immediately, if fails to do so then it may lead to the emergence of several chronic diseases such as:

High blood pressure

Heart failure

Stroke

Obesity

Depression and other mood disorders

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Mental impairment

Childhood growth retardation

So, if you really want to improve your quality of life and want to be fit and healthy all day long then never ever compromise with your sleeping hours. Take proper eight hour sleep daily and maintain balanced and healthy lifestyle, which is free from all chronic health ailments.

There are reasons to get worried if you ever woken up at night from sleep, disturbed by a sudden movement from your partner? In medical parlance, this is known as PLMS, or Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep, which typically consists of muscle twitches or flexing of the legs once every 20 to 40 seconds. Essentially, it is random movement of the arms and legs that occur regularly while you sleep. The movements can sometimes lead to arousals. Also known as PLMD, or Periodic Limb Movements Disorder, it is distinguished from RLS, or Restless Limb Syndrome. In the latter case, it occurs when the person is asleep as well as awake. It occurs more often during the first half of the night, during the early sleep period.

PLMS occurs in about 4% of the adult population, but is observed more in case of the female elderly, who make up 11% of those experiencing the syndrome. A study found 45% of adults above 65 years of age experience PLMS, compared to 5% to 6% in lesser age groups. It is involuntary, and since it occurs during sleep, the patient is mostly unaware of it happening. While another study found 80% of people experiencing RLS also experience PLMS, the reverse is not necessarily true.

Medical science still doesn’t know the exact causes of PLMS, although many PLMS sufferers also experience other medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or narcolepsy. Certain habits and conditions such as snoring, excessive stress, working in shifts and drinking coffee have also been observed to exacerbate the conditions. For women, obstructive sleep apnea, cataplexy, physical activities just before sleep have been known to lead to a high incidence of PLMS. Perhaps anomalies in the nervous system cause PLMS, although studies have not yet revealed a high correlation.

PLMS is usually not treated as a cause for concern until and unless it is accompanied with more serious conditions such as RLS or daytime fatigue caused by insomnia. It is often treated in conjunction with Parkinson’s disease, if present, and similar medication is prescribed including anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines, and narcotics. Since a cure has not been developed yet, patients must complete the full medication course in order to experience relief. During the course of treatment, doctors also advise abstinence from caffeine, alcohol or anti-depressants, which might worsen the conditions causing little to no sleep. Other drugs which have been shown to effectively eliminate leg jerks are dopaminergic agents such as co-careldopa, co-beneldopa, pergolide and lisuride. However, co-careldopa and, to a lesser extent, pergolide may simply cause leg movements to occur at daytime instead of nighttime.

If you are having symptoms of PLMS, and feel that your sleep is being disrupted to the point that you are feeling drowsy during the day or getting no sleep at night, it is best to seek medical opinion. Consult your family physician or visit an accredited sleep disorder center after taking prior appointment. The sleep clinic will record your myoclonus index (MI), which is essentially the number of kicks with arousals per hour of sleep. PLMS is diagnosed when MI is observed to be greater than 5.

Do you have a nightmare and wake up with a start in the middle of the night, only to find out you were enacting your dream while sleeping? Or perhaps your partner shook you and woke you up because you were shouting, kicking your arms or otherwise moving about while sleeping? It is not only action stars who wake violently from their dreams in movies, but we ordinary folks do so too. The symptom, in medical terminology, is known as REM Behavior Disorder (RBD). As is evident from the name, it occurs during the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) part of the sleep, and was first medically described in 1985.

Sleep constitutes slipping in and out of three states – wakefulness, REM sleep and non rapid eye movement, or N-REM sleep. REM sleep is usually associated with the most vivid dreaming part of sleep, and the resultant loss of motor inhibition causes a wide range of behavioral release. Although RBD is usually harmless, occasionally it can cause injuries to the self or to the bed partner, if the movements are violent enough, or the dreamer gets involved in an accident .Curiously, RBD is not usually associated with “happy” or “normal” dreams, but only manifests itself during “negative” dreams that involve elements of violent struggle, leading to the dreamer kicking out his limbs, shouting, punching or even jumping out of bed.

What is the medical symptom of RBD, as opposed to normal REM sleep? During REM sleep, a brain map in an electroencephalogram shows electrical activity that is indistinguishable from the wakeful state. However, even though the neurons remain active, sleeping leads to temporary muscle paralysis.

But in case of persons who show symptoms of RBD, boundaries between different sleep states blur – characteristics of one state can spill over into another. The same symptoms are seen in other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy or parasomnia. It is commonly believed that this occurs because neurological “barriers” between the different states do not function properly anymore, although the exact mechanism for the malfunction has not been conclusively determined yet. Although the symptoms are somewhat similar, RBD is different from other sleep disorders such as sleepwalking, sleep terror, nocturnal seizure or sleep apnea.

RBD is estimated to occur in 1 out of every 200 individuals between 15 to 100 years of age, though it is much more frequent among males – only 1 out of 10 sufferers is a female. However this skewedness might be a result of referral bias, since violent activities in men get referred more often than those in women.

RBD was first reported by Mark Mahowald, MD, and Carlos Schenck, MD of the University of

Minnesota in Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine (W.B. Saunders Company,2000). They illustrated several cases, including that of a retired school principal who was punching and kicking his wife for the past two years, because he was actually dreaming about protecting her from aggressors! Another sufferer, a war veteran, dreamt of being attacked by the enemy, and would injure himself by fighting back.

While RBD can be chronic, it is also treatable. Clonazepam, in low to moderate doses, cures 90% of RBD patients by suppressing muscle activity, rather than restoration of atonia. A natural alternative is Melatonin, while Levodopa works for those also suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
